Wang Wencai, male, Han nationality, is a native of Ye County in Shandong Province. He graduated from the Biological Department of Beijing Normal University in 1949. Wang is an academician and plant taxonomist.
A researcher with the Biological Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang focused his academic studies on taxonomical research of plants – among them, the buttercup, nettle family, borage, and Gesneriaccae. During his studies, he discovered twenty new categories –which amounted to 550 new species. Wang later established a classification system for the delphinine genus, Tangsong grass genus, side celedulin, clematis genus, and others.
Wang found a karst area in an area near Guizhou, Guangxi Province – an area that contains the richest collections of sub-Gesneriaceae plants in the world. This area contains 42 genus and 210 species of such sub-genus.
He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993.
