Biography

Tomur Dawamat, male, Uygur nationality, is a native of Toksun in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He was born in 1927, received limited formal schooling and joined the CPC in 1952.

His career began in local government. He subsequently attended the Central Institute for Nationalities and became known as a writer of poetry in the Uygur language. Tomur held increasingly elevated Party and government posts spanning five decades, principally in Xinjiang. He also held central government positions, including vice-minister of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. He was chairman of the Xinjiang Regional People's Government during 1985 to 1993 and was deputy secretary of the CPC Xinjiang Regional Committee during the same period.

Tomur was a member of the 12th, 13th and 14th CPC Central Committees and vice-chairman of the 8th and 9th NPC Standing Committees.
