Biography

Liu Qi, male, Han nationality, is a native of Wujin, Jiangsu Province. Lui was born in November 1942, joined the CPC in September 1975 and entered the workforce in June 1968. Liu graduated from the Metallurgical Department of Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Engineering, majoring in iron smelting. With a postgraduate education, he holds the professional title of Senior Engineer, equivalent in rank to the title of Professor.

Liu worked in Wuhan in the iron and steel industry throughout from the 1960s through the 1980s. By 1990 he was manager of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company, one of China's largest steel plants. Later in the 1990s, he moved to Beijing as minister of Metallurgy and later as minister of Metallurgical Industry. In the late 1990s, Liu was active in Beijing Party affairs and in government, becoming secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and mayor of Beijing.

Liu was an alternate member of the 14th CPC Central Committee and a member of the 15th and 16th CPC Central Committees. Liu is a member of the Politboro of the 17th CPC Central Committee, a member of the 17th CPC Central Committee, and secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee.
